CRITICAL QUESTION #2 TO BREAK THE
CYCLE OF EMOTIONAL OVEREATING
In the last post, I addressed A KILLER IMPORTANT QUESTION THAT SO MANY OF US DON’T EVEN THINK TO ASK OURSELVES WHEN WE ARE ABOUT TO EMOTIONALLY EAT:
AM I TRULY PHYSICALLY HUNGRY?
CRUCIAL TIP: If you’re not truly physically hungry, don’t eat. But many of us don’t know how to distinguish true physical hunger.
So the next critical question that follows is:
QUESTION #2 WHAT DOES TRUE PHYSICAL HUNGER FEEL LIKE FOR ME?
THIS ONE REQUIRES SOME HOMEWORK:
Let yourself not eat for 6-7ish hours (for some of us it make take more because of how big our last meal was.) Your brain may tell you, but I’m supposed to eat every couple of hours (the most current research is showing this is not true, actually not snacking is much better for our bodies).
Resist the urge to snack, hydrate a ton & let your body naturally start to tell you what true physical hunger feels like.
Each person’s body will manifest true physical hunger slightly differently. So please do your own research & data collection on your body.
Most people experience some of these similarities when manifesting true physical hunger:
There will be a grumble in your tummy & the hunger sensation comes and goes in waves.
What I mean by waves is that, if you’re busy, you’ll register hunger, but if you can’t get away from whatever activity you are doing, the hunger wave will subside for a while.
This is what I mean by it comes & goes in waves. Even if you are not busy, if you feel a wave of hunger, if you just sit with it, you can re-direct your attention to something else and it will subside for a while. And it helps to hydrate to re-direct.
**SIDE NOTE: WE ARE OFTEN THIRSTY WHEN WE THINK WE ARE HUNGRY. THIS HAPPENS A LOT IN THE MORNING. WHEN WE WAKE UP, WE’VE BEEN SWEATING, PROBABLY GONE TO THE BATHROOM & ARE A LITTLE DEHYDRATED: TRY DRINKING A COUPLE BIG GLASSES OF WATER AFTER YOU GET UP-IT CAN HELP YOU REGULATE TO TRUE PHYSICAL HUNGER.
Answer the following question after not eating for 6-8 hours…wait until you are good and sure that you are experiencing physical hunger then write down the answer to this question:
In what ways does your body manifest true physical hunger?
What does it feel like? What sensations is your stomach having & any other part of your body. If you feel light headed, or extra hungry, it’s often because (not always, but often) you had a lot of refined carbohydrates before & you did this homework.
If you feel a constant gnawing in your mind, bugging you, a craving, often accompanied by thoughts like, I gotta have my doughnuts, brownies, that burger I saw advertised on the TV etc…you are probably experiencing emotional hunger.
If the feeling is making you feel like if you don’t have that doughnut, you might die-that’s usually emotional hunger (which is not true physical hunger).
Bottom line here-if it’s not true physical hunger don’t eat.
Get curious about it.
