HOW CURIOSITY SAVES YOU FROM 

EMOTIONAL EATING 


Can you remember how curious you may have been as a child or do you remember how curious a small child is? Isn’t it beautiful?  Sometimes we may not think it’s beautiful, and we do this to our own curiosity potential as well. 

LET’S INVITE THAT CURIOSITY BACK!  BECAUSE ANOTHER SUPER TOOL FOR LASTING CHANGE AROUND EMOTIONAL EATING IS CURIOSITY.

IF YOU REALLY WANT TO CREATE FREEDOM FROM EMOTIONAL EATING, YOU HAVE TO CHOOSE CURIOSITY ON PURPOSE.

(BTW: IF YOU WANT TO CREATE FREEDOM FROM ANY EMOTIONAL UPSET-CURIOSITY IS WHERE YOU START!)

When you are having a day where your “will power feels low” & you notice the urges to emotionally overeat…instead of giving in…

GET CURIOUS…and ask yourself the following questions:

I WONDER WHY I’M FEELING THE URGE TO OVER EAT RIGHT NOW?

I WONDER WHAT THOUGHT I’M FIXATING ON SUBCONSCIOUSLY, SEMI-CONSCIOUSLY OR CONSCIOUSLY?

I WONDER WHAT EMOTION I’M TRYING TO AVOID BY EATING THIS?

I WONDER WHY I’M TRYING TO AVOID THIS FEELING?

I WONDER WHAT THAT’S ABOUT?

WHY MIGHT I BE WANTING TO AVOID IT?

REALLY recommend writing the answers to these questions down on paper. 

There is serious power in physically jotting it down. 

Giving yourself a kinesthetic task (writing things down) while processing emotion, gives the brain one more tool to help remove or distance your survival brain from the trigger of the emotion. (I can’t wait to dive more into this book: Opening Up by Writing it Down: How Expressive Writing Improves Health & Eases Emotional Pain by James W. Pennebaker)

THEN AFTER YOU ANSWER THE QUESTIONS ABOVE HAVE A CHAT WITH YOUR BRAIN
TELL YOUR BRAIN…

THIS IS INTRIGUING DATA ON HOW MY BRAIN WORKS!

HOW FASCINATING IS THIS!

THIS IS SO INTERESTING!

THIS IS SUCH CAPTIVATING INFORMATION/INSIGHT INTO MY THOUGHT PROCESSES!

THIS IS SO CURIOUS!

DON’T JUDGE IT.

DON’T JUDGE ANY OF IT.

JUST LOOK AT IT.

TELL YOURSELF: WHAT IF I’M NOT MISBEHAVING?

This might feel like a load of crap to choose to think these thoughts… 

AND I WANT TO OFFER YOU THE FOLLOWING IF IT DOES: What if that’s OK too?

What if you IT’S TOTALLY OK TO THINK THIS IS BALONEY OR I’M NOT QUITE BUYING INTO THIS YET…just let yourself think, this is hooey, this is baloney—don’t judge that either.

JUST BE CURIOUS!

ASK YOURSELF: I WONDER WHY I THINK THAT…AND GO THROUGH THE QUESTIONS AGAIN.

THIS IS NORMAL.

YOU HAVE A NORMAL HUMAN BRAIN!

JUST SIT WITH THE ANSWERS TO THE QUESTIONS.

DON’T JUDGE ANY OF THE ANSWERS.

LOOK AT YOUR BRAIN WITH CURIOSITY & COMPASSION.

DON’T GO NUMB YOURSELF OUT WITH CHEESE PUFFS.

DON’T GO OVER EAT.

DON’T GO OVER SPEND, OVER FACEBOOK, OVER DRINK, OVER ANYTHING.

JUST LOOK AT YOUR BRAIN WITH CURIOSITY. KEEP UNRAVELING IT. KEEP ASKING THE QUESTIONS. AND JUST LOOK AT THE ANSWERS WITH CURIOSITY.

What do you learn while OBSERVING THE ANSWERS TO THESE QUESTIONS?
What do you see as you observe from a curious space instead of judgmental space?

WHAT DO YOU LEARN AS YOU NOTICE YOU ARE JUDGING YOURSELF & THESE IDEAS?
WHAT IF THAT’S ALL OK TOO? WHAT DOES THAT ILLUMINATE?

IS IT POSSIBLE THAT….

YOU MAY SEE how you haven’t been letting yourself be authentic about how stressed, sad, full of hurt you are?

Could you just be honest with yourself & give yourself permission to honor that you are stressed, honor that you are sad, honor that you are full of hurt, despair or overwhelm?

What if you tried just looking at it with curiosity instead of stuffing it with brownies, ice cream, a huge bowl of cereal or a pizza?

Could you just start there?

WHEN WE START WITH CURIOSITY, USING THESE QUESTIONS & WRITING DOWN THE ANSWERS WHEN POSSIBLE, WE CREATE BABY STEPS OF FREEDOM AROUND EMOTIONAL EATING.

AND BABY STEPS IS HOW WE MAKE LASTING CHANGE.
