CREATE JOY ON PURPOSE INSTEAD OF EATING FOR STRESS, HURT OR PAIN

Hello beautiful friends!

Let’s talk about Joy!

That word that describes what you really want to create & have more of in your life & heart. For some people that word is Happy, or Contentment or Bliss, Exhilaration or Ecstasy etc. For me that word is JOY! Whatever your word is that describes what you’d like to create & feel more of in your life, think of that now.

What I’d like to focus on is how much joydo you currently have in your life? AND…What things currently bring you your joy?

This is a REALLY IMPORTANT question to ask yourself if you want to create new results in your life especially with weight-loss.

Why? Because, if more than 10% of our comfort, reward or joy is coming from food, which is only a temporary pleasure, we need to look at IT.

GOING TO FOOD AS A COMFORT, JOY OR REWARD is not LONG-LASTING well-being. 

It will not love us, or cuddle or kiss us, it will not bring us cold medicine in the middle of the night or change our Depends diapers when we are old.

When we see food as a HUGE joy, reward or comfort, the result that creates is not the result you really want. It only creates over-weight-ness. THAT’S IT. Bottom line. 

That’s what thinking that food is joy or life creates.

I invite you to really think about these questions:

What brings you temporary pleasure? Sugar, flour & overeating food that is not fuel. These give a temporary dopamine hit & an insulin spike. That’s it. Nada más. Nothing else.

What brings you long-lasting well-being? Is it a connection with yourself, a connection with family & friends, a connection with your spiritual beliefs? Is it walking by the lake or getting a massage or writing or drawing or painting or playing with a child or singing or writing or hiking or swimming or dancing or serving someone or organizing or building something or conquering a new piece of your business or taking a class or learning something new or taking beautiful photographs all of the above or something else? (All the “ors” are added for emphasis yes. 😊)

What things REALLY give you access to be the best version of yourself? Think about what you did that filled up your joy reservoirs or your happy reservoirs or your love, bliss, contentment, exhilaration reservoirs?

IF SLEEP ISN’T AT THE TOP OF THAT LIST, PLEASE TAKE A LOOK AT IT 😊What can you be when you’ve had good sleep? Make this a priority if you have not in the past. This one thing alone can change your life. GOOD FUEL FOOD IS ANOTHER TOP PRIORITY.

What else fills your Joy/Happiness/Bliss/Contentment reservoirs? Think about it. I can tell you that I need some quiet time on Fridays to re-group for the week. I need to move my body every day in ways that make my heart sing (oh yeah, GOTT-A DANCE: Zumba baby). I need to take care of my body by giving it healthy fuel food. I need to walk out in nature 1-2 times a week. I need to make time to do my spiritual practice each day. I need to connect with my sweetie each night. I need to connect with my mom, siblings at least 1x a week. I need to connect with my 27 nieces & nephews 1-2 x a month. I need to sing at the top of my lungs at least 2-4 times a week. I need to be with kiddos-since my nieces & nephews are all far away, I go visit my former students’ school where I used to teach. I also love on the kiddos I know from church-with their parent’s permission of course 😊. I need to see musical theater several times a year.

MAKE YOUR OWN LIST: WHAT FILLS YOUR INNER RESERVOIRS? WHAT BRINGS YOU LONG-TERM WELL-BEING?

Once you have a list of things that bring you your joy, 

MAKE SURE YOU PUT THEM IN YOUR CALENDAR-PHYSICALLY WRITE IT OR PROGRAM IT IN YOUR PHONE & THEN KEEP THAT APPOINTMENT WITH YOURSELF (PRACTICE SAYING NO IF SOMEONE ASKS YOU TO DO SOMETHING DURING THIS TIME).

YOUR HAPPINESS is one of the most the most important priorities to think about.

AND IT REQUIRES SELF-CARE.

The things WE do to create joy are really the things WE CAN DO to take care of OURSELVES.

Our survival brains can often go to the space of “self-care is selfish”. That’s just survival brain trying to maintain homeostasis/status quo/not change. That’s it. 

YOU HAVE THE CHOICE TO THINK OTHERWISE. REMEMBER ALL THOUGHTS CAN BE OPTIONAL.

When we don’t take care of ourselves, we are empty RESERVOIRS. We don’t have our best self to give or share. As an empty reservoir, it’s easy to get resentful, it’s easy to get angry, it’s easy to treat those closest to us in a way that our inner-most hearts really don’t want to.

WHEN WE HAVE AN EMPTY INNER JOY RESERVOIR, IT’S EASY TO PUT FOOD IN OUR MOUTHS THAT WE REALLY DON’T NEED TO SEEK COMFORT.

Maybe you have a lot of joy in your life! AWESOME! Keep it up!
Sometimes when we feel we have a lot of joy & we find we are overeating, there is some negative emotion or stress we are trying to avoid feeling.

Beautiful Friends: please give yourself the gift to really think about what brings you JOY.

YOU WILL HAVE SO MUCH MORE TO GIVE & SO MUCH MORE CAPACITY TO BE & CREATE WHAT YOU REALLY WANT TO CREATE WHEN YOU SCHEDULE YOUR JOY IN.

I can’t conclude without giving a SERIOUS SHOUT-OUT to John Burgoyne, my best friend, my rock, my hubby, & THE MOST AMAZING KING OF JOY I’VE EVER MET. He has taught me so much about CHOOSING JOY EVERY DAY NO MATTER WHAT.
